We designed an AR, 3D animated world for the Beetle, and packed it into an app.
When you’ve got a brand as well loved as the VW Beetle, the release of any new iteration is cause for celebration. For the launch of the revamped 2012 version, Toronto agency Red Urban knew they needed some major WOW factor to turn heads. So, they approached us with an idea to turn regular billboards into animated 3D sources of marketing magic.
So, how’d we do it? We started by designing a 3D virtual world for the Beetle, including animated ramps and roads, then packed it all into an app. VW fans could then download the app, open it and point their phone at a billboard for the new car. When they did, the animation would open, putting them in the virtual driver seat as the car tore up half-pipes, drifted on a track, and more. Thanks to our expertise in Augmented Reality, the campaign was an immediate success, generated a lot of press and grew some serious love for the new Beetle. Good times.
